Courageous Love When Life Goes Sideways-Sunday, 12/21/25

Scripture: Matthew 1:18–21

Joseph’s story begins with disruption. Nothing is unfolding the way he imagined. The future he thought he understood suddenly feels fragile and uncertain. And yet, instead of reacting with anger or shame, Joseph pauses. He chooses not to make things worse.

Courageous love often starts right there—in the pause. Before explanations. Before certainty. Before everything makes sense. Joseph teaches us that love is not about having the whole picture; it’s about choosing compassion when the picture is incomplete.

Many of us are living in stories that feel sideways right now. Plans didn’t hold. Relationships shifted. Responsibilities arrived uninvited. The temptation is to protect ourselves at all costs. Joseph shows another way—choosing care instead of control.

God meets Joseph not after the confusion clears, but right in the middle of it. Advent reminds us that God does the same with us.

Reflection Question: Where has life gone “sideways” for you—and what might courageous love look like there?

Action Step: Today, pause before reacting to one difficult situation. Choose one response that minimizes harm and extends grace.

Prayer: God of compassion, meet me in the middle of my confusion. Give me courage to choose love before I have all the answers. Amen.
