Fruit Grows from Connection

Most of us know we’re supposed to love our neighbors. The harder question is where the energy comes from when we’re running on empty. Family, work, the news, and the endless to-do list all pull on us, and then someone says, “Be patient. Show up. Love well.” An honest part of us answers, With what? I’m tired.

Jesus speaks to that tired place. On the night before the cross, he doesn’t tell his frightened friends to try harder. He gives them a picture:

“Remain in me, and I in you. As the branch can’t bear fruit by itself, unless it remains in the vine, so neither can you, unless you remain in me. I am the vine. You are the branches. He who remains in me and I in him, the same bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:4–5, WEB)

A branch doesn’t grit its teeth and force grapes into existence. It receives the life of the vine, and the fruit follows. Jesus is the vine, we are the branches, and God is the gardener. Nobody in the picture is assigned to decide which other branches belong, and that is good news. We aren’t the source of love. We are connected to the Source.

This is what John Wesley called grace: God’s love reaches us before we ever do anything to earn it. Prayer, Scripture, worship, Communion, and acts of mercy don’t make God love us. They are channels that keep us open to the love already flowing toward us. And when we stay connected, that love starts to change how we see people. Where we saw labels, we begin to see neighbors.

Fruit grows from connection, not exhaustion.

Reflection Question
What is crowding out love in your life right now, such as hurry, an old resentment, or the need to win every argument? What might it look like to set it down this week?

Application
Try three small movements this week:

  • Abide. Before you open the news, social media, or a tense conversation, pray one sentence: “Jesus, true Vine, let your love remain in me today.”
  • Prune. Choose one thing that crowds out love and set it aside for a week.
  • Bear fruit. Take one small step toward one real person. Learn the name of someone you usually pass, check in on someone who is alone, or listen to someone who sees the world differently.

Closing Prayer
Gracious God, true Vine and faithful Gardener, help us make our home in your love. Clear away what crowds out life in us, and teach us to see a neighbor where we have seen a label. Let your love bear fruit in us and through us. Amen.
