Love Pays Attention – Tuesday, 09/15/2026

Scripture Reading: Mark 10:46–52

There is something easy to miss in this story.

Jesus is surrounded by a crowd.

People are moving.

People are talking.

There is somewhere to go.

And in the middle of all that noise, one person cries out for help.

Others want him to be quiet.

Jesus stops.

That may be one of the simplest pictures of love we can find.

Jesus stops.

Before anything else happens, Jesus notices the person everyone else is trying to move past.

Our lives have crowds too.

Schedules.

Notifications.

School activities.

Appointments.

Work.

Errands.

News.

Household responsibilities.

We can care deeply about people and still move past them because we are distracted.

Sometimes we do it with the people closest to us.

Someone begins talking and we keep looking at the phone.

A child says something that seems small to us but is big to them.

A spouse looks tired, but we are already thinking about what needs to happen next.

An older parent starts telling the same story again.

Love often begins before we say anything.

It begins when we stop.

Attention communicates:

You are not an interruption. You matter.

That is why small habits can become spiritual practices.

Putting down a phone.

Turning toward someone.

Making eye contact.

Asking one more question.

Listening long enough to hear what is underneath the first answer.

God’s grace gradually trains our attention outward.

And sometimes the most loving thing we can give another person is not advice.

It is our presence.

Reflection Question: Who in your life may need more of your attention than your advice?

Concrete Action Step: Give one person ten uninterrupted minutes today. No phone. No multitasking. No fixing. Ask: “How are you really doing?” Then listen.

Prayer: Attentive God, slow me down enough to notice the people around me. Help me recognize when someone needs my presence more than my solution. Teach me to listen with patience and care. Amen.
