Start With What You Have Received – Monday, 09/14/2026
Scripture Reading: Titus 3:3–8
It is easy to turn a message about love into another assignment.
Be more patient. Listen better. Help more. Forgive faster. Be kinder.
And by Monday morning, what sounded encouraging on Sunday can feel like one more list of things we are failing to do.
That is why it matters where Christian love begins.
It does not begin with us trying harder.
It begins with grace.
Titus describes God acting toward us with kindness and mercy—not because we finally became good enough, but because mercy is who God is.
That order matters.
John Wesley, one of the founders of the Methodist movement, talked constantly about grace because he believed God is already at work in our lives before we recognize it. God meets us, forgives us, restores us, and then continues shaping us into people who increasingly reflect that love.
So the first question today is not, “How can I become a more loving person?”
It may be: Can I believe that I am already loved?
Some of us find that surprisingly difficult.
We know how to earn a paycheck.
We know how to earn a grade.
We know how to prove ourselves at work.
We may even approach relationships by trying to earn approval.
But grace cannot be earned.
It is received.
And people who know they are loved do not have to spend quite as much energy proving themselves.
They become freer to notice somebody else.
Freer to apologize.
Freer to serve.
Freer to love without keeping score.
Love in action begins with love received.
Reflection Question: Where are you still trying to prove that you are worthy of love?
Concrete Action Step: Take two quiet minutes today and simply pray: “God, help me receive the love I keep trying to earn.” Do not add anything to it. Let receiving be enough.
Prayer: Gracious God, I spend so much energy trying to prove myself. Help me trust that your love comes before my achievement. Let the grace I receive from you make me freer to love the people around me. Amen.
