When Fear Starts Making the Decisions
Scripture
Fear is not always temptation. Sometimes fear is a wise warning that protects us from danger.
But fear becomes spiritually dangerous when it begins making every decision.
Fear can tempt us to withdraw from people.
To assume the worst.
To cling to control.
To lash out before we can be hurt.
To choose safety over faithfulness.
To believe we are entirely alone.
Psalm 121 does not promise that nothing difficult will happen. It promises that our help comes from the One who does not sleep, forget, or abandon us.
Isaiah speaks to people facing uncertainty and displacement:
“Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.”
The promise is not that we will avoid every river or fire. The promise is that God will be with us through them.
“Deliver us from evil” is not a prayer of denial. It is a prayer of trust.
God, protect us from what can destroy us.
Protect us from evil around us.
Protect us from fear becoming evil within us.
Keep fear from turning us cruel, closed, dishonest, or hopeless.
Courage does not mean we feel no fear. It means fear does not get the final vote.
Practice
Name one decision currently being shaped by fear.
Ask:
“What would this decision look like if I believed God was with me?”
Take one small courageous step.
Prayer
God who watches over us,
you know what frightens me. Protect me from real harm, and protect my heart from being ruled by fear. Remind me that I am known, held, and accompanied. Give me courage for the next faithful step. Amen.
