Who Do You Say I Am? - Tuesday, 08/18/2026
Scripture: Matthew 16:13–20
Jesus didn't ask this question in a safe, familiar setting. He asked it standing in the shadow of temples built to other gods, other claims on people's ultimate loyalty. It's still a fair question for us: with everything else competing for our trust today — our schedules, our bank accounts, our need to be seen as capable — who do we actually say Jesus is?
Peter's answer wasn't complete theology. He still had a lot to learn about what kind of Messiah Jesus would turn out to be. But it was enough — enough of a foundation for Jesus to say, on this I will build. Our answer doesn't have to be perfect either. It just has to be honest, and it has to shape how we treat the people closest to us.
Reflection Question: If someone watched how you spoke to and treated your family this week, what would they conclude you believe about who Jesus is?
Today's Application: Before responding to a frustrating moment at home today, pause and silently ask, “Who do I say Jesus is, right now, in this moment?”
Prayer: Jesus, you are the Messiah, the Son of the living God. Build your life into ours today — into our patience, our words, our attention to the people you've placed near us. Amen.
