In the Garden - Friday, 04/18/2026

Song: "In the Garden" (Traditional Hymn) [Click here to listen to the song.]

Scripture: John 20:11-18

"And He walks with me, and He talks with me, and He tells me I am His own."

There is a reason "In the Garden" has been sung at bedsides, gravesides, and in the quiet of early mornings for well over a century. It speaks to the most intimate dimension of Christian faith — not God as cosmic power, but God as personal presence. Our own Jennifer Lacefield has sung it as a lullaby to children and grandchildren, at the burial of loved ones, and as a gift of comfort to the grieving. It carries people through because it points to a God who comes close.

John 20 is the garden story that inspired the hymn's imagery. Mary Magdalene stands weeping outside the empty tomb, and the risen Jesus approaches her. She does not recognize Christ at first — perhaps through tears, perhaps because resurrection was simply beyond what she was expecting. But then Jesus speaks her name: "Mary." One word. Her name. And everything changed.

This is the God we worship. Not a God who delivers announcements from a distance, but a God who knows your name, who meets you in your garden of grief, and who speaks personally into your particular sorrow. The resurrection is not merely a historical event — it is an ongoing encounter. The risen Christ still walks in gardens. Still speaks names. Still meets people exactly where they are.

Good Friday's cross and Easter's empty tomb are both in our recent view this week. Let your heart stay close to the garden this Friday. Do not rush past the intimacy of the resurrection story in your hurry to make the faith manageable and systematic. Jesus is alive — and not a distant doctrine. Christ is a present companion.

You are known by name. You are God's own. Let that be enough for today.

Reflection Question: When have you most clearly sensed the personal, close presence of the Risen Christ — and what made that moment possible?

Action Step: Find a quiet place outside or near a window today. Read John 20:11-18 slowly. Imagine yourself in Mary's place. Let Jesus speak your name.

Prayer: Risen Lord, thank You for not remaining at a distance. You meet us in our gardens — in our grief, in our confusion, in our ordinary days. Speak our names today. Remind us that we are Yours, and walk with us. Amen.
