Scripture: 1 John 4:18-19
Fear has a way of shrinking our world. It teaches us to avoid, withdraw, protect ourselves, and stay close only to what feels safe and familiar. Most of the time, we don’t even realize it’s happening. We simply begin pulling away from people who seem different, difficult, frustrating, or unfamiliar.
But today’s scripture reminds us that fear does not get the final word. “Perfect love casts out fear.” John is not saying fear magically disappears overnight. He is saying that when we become deeply rooted in the love of God, fear slowly begins losing its control over us.
That matters in everyday life more than we realize. It matters when we scroll through social media and immediately assume the worst about people we disagree with. It matters in family conversations that become tense and guarded. It matters in schools, workplaces, neighborhoods, and even churches where people increasingly feel divided from one another.
Many adults in Monroe carry quiet fears right now—fear about the future, politics, cultural change, finances, parenting, aging, or simply not knowing who to trust anymore. Fear can make us defensive without us even noticing. It can turn human beings into categories.
But God’s love keeps moving toward people. That is the heart of the gospel. Before we figured life out, before we cleaned ourselves up, before we learned how to love well, God loved us first. Completely. Patiently. Faithfully.
And when we truly begin receiving that love, something changes inside us. We become less threatened. Less reactive. Less controlled by fear. We begin to see people not as enemies to avoid, but as human beings loved by God too.
Reflection Question: Where in my life is fear causing me to pull away from people instead of moving toward them with compassion?
Action Step: Reach out to one person this week you’ve been avoiding, distancing yourself from, or silently judging. Send a text, start a conversation, or offer a kind word.
Prayer: God of perfect love, help me receive your love deeply enough that fear loses its grip on my heart and compassion shapes the way I see others. Amen.
