Who Are You Looking For? - Sunday, 04/05/2026
Scripture: John 20:1–18
Mary Magdalene went to the tomb while it was still dark. She wasn't going because she had faith that something miraculous was about to happen. She went because she loved Jesus and didn't know what else to do. That kind of love — the kind that shows up even when hope seems gone — is something God never overlooks.
When Mary arrived, the stone was rolled away and the tomb was empty. Her first instinct wasn't wonder — it was panic. She ran to get the others. They came, they looked, and then they went home. But Mary stayed. She stood outside the tomb, crying. And that staying — that simple, grief-soaked staying — is what changed everything.
Jesus appeared to her, but she didn't recognize him at first. She thought he was the gardener. It wasn't until he said her name — 'Mary' — that she knew. That's a detail worth sitting with. Resurrection wasn't announced with trumpets or a scroll. It was announced in one quiet, personal word. Her name. Spoken by someone who knew her completely.
That same risen Christ is alive today. Not as a memory or a good idea, but as a living presence who knows your name — every good thing about you and every hard thing you carry. Easter isn't just a date on the calendar. It's the claim that death didn't win, that love is stronger than the grave, and that you are known by the one who proved it.
Whatever you're carrying into this week — grief, uncertainty, questions you haven't been able to answer — you don't have to have it all figured out to be found by God. Mary didn't. She just stayed close enough to hear her name. That's a good place to start.
Reflection Question: When has God met you in a moment of grief or confusion in a way you didn't expect?
Action Step: Read John 20:1–18 slowly today — as a story, not a doctrine. Notice one detail you've never paid attention to before and sit with it for a few minutes.
Prayer: God, I don't always recognize you when you show up. But I believe you're here. Speak my name today, in whatever way I'm able to hear it. Amen.
