The Gifts We Overlook

Our culture celebrates independence and hard work, and there is much to value in both. But none of us begins from zero. We receive life, ability, opportunity, relationships, knowledge, land, community, and grace before we ever turn them into accomplishments. Moses warns Israel not to forget this when life becomes comfortable, and Jesus describes fruitful life as staying connected to the vine. Stewardship begins before giving: it begins by remembering what we have received.
